MASVINGO-A typhoid outbreak of typhoid is feared to have hit Masvingo City in December last year and left at least 17 people hospitalized. Typhoid fever which is caused by the bacterium Salmonella typhi, is a life-threatening bacterial infection.
Efforts to get comment from the Provincial Medical Director, Amadeus Shamhu were futile as his mobile was not reachable.
However, impeccable sources revealed that the number might have risen to more than 29 to date.
Severe potable water shortages exacerbated by incessant power cuts and lack of adequate sanitation in areas around Victoria Ranch are said to be the major problems contributing to the spread of this infection.
Masvingo City Council spokesman, Ashley Jinjika, said the council is doing its best to supply clean water in the city.
“Our water supply has vastly improved. We are trying our best to supply clean water ro our residents,” said Jinjika.
