REDCLIFF – Redcliff Town Council is offering a 60% discount to residents and ratepayers who pay their service bills in US$.
Redcliff Mayor Vincent Musiiwa urged residents to take advantage of the initiative in an interview with The Mirror.
He said the initiative is to raise money to pay off a water debt owed to Kwekwe City Council. “We have introduced a 60% discount to all residents and ratepayers who pay their bills in United States Dollars. The development is aimed at increasing our revenue base so that we can our water
bill to Kwekwe City. Kwekwe is willing to give us a discount if we pay in United States Dollars,” he said.
Zisco Steel treated and distributed water to Redcliff residents before it began facing financial hardships. Redcliff now gets its water from Kwekwe but has been failing to pay its service bill.
The town can at times go for weeks without tap water leaving residents stranded. Some rely on contaminated water from rivers and streams that are contaminated with cyanide used by illegal miners in the area.
Maria Hlaisi, a Redcliff resident urged the local authority to find a lasting solution to the water problem.
“As residents, we suggest that council should come in the open with a total budget required to solve the water problem. They should also approach the resident minister and the corporate
world to find a lasting solution to the problem,” she said.
