MASVINGO –Masvingo Teachers College principal Benson Mutambudzi died last night around 9: 30 pm after he was involved in a road accident near Chatsworth turnoff. He was 61.Acting Masvingo Police Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Lorraine Ndlovu confirmed his death. She added that six other people were rushed to Masvingo Provincial Hospital with injuries.

The two vehicles that collided are still at the scene waiting to be towed to the Vehicle inspection Department (VED).Circumstances are that Mutambudzi was traveling back to Masvingo from Harare with one passenger.Sources said he had travelled to Harare to attend a graduation ceremony. He was driving a Honda CR-V. Raymond Nyamweda (42) of Warren Park in Harare was driving a Toyota Fortuner behind him with six passengers.

That is when Nyamweda’s vehicle rammed into the driver’s side of the CRV.The impact of collision threw Mutambudzi’s vehicle three metres from the road. She said it is not yet clear whether Mutambudzi signaled before making the turn or Nyamweda was speeding and driving closely behind him.“Mutambudzi was turning right at the 254 km peg when Nyamweda’s vehicle rammed into him.

The Honda CRV swerved and veered off the road. It landed on its wheels some three metres from the road. The Fortuner swerved and hit a culvert. Five passengers were injured.“It is not yet ascertained whether Mutambudzi signaled before turning right or whether Nyamweda was driving closely behind him or speeding.
