Manicaland Permanent Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Abiot Maronge confirmed his death to Chipinge Times.
He said Chief Makumbe passed on in Harare yesterday but could not be drawn into further details.
“Yes, I can confirm Chief Makumbe’s untimely death. He was not feeling well. His health deteriorated this week. He passed on in Harare yesterday. Burial arrangements will be announced later as we are still consulting his family over the issue.
“His death is a big blow to Manicaland as he was a development champion and also spoke strongly against early child marriages,” said Maronge.
Chief Makumbe was Manicaland Chiefs Assembly provincial chairperson and a member of the National Chiefs Council. He was also recently elected senator chief for a second term.
