Zvishavane Town constructing new sewer pipeline

ZVISHAVANE – Zvishavane Town Council is constructing a three kilometer long sewer pipeline from Escrow Makwasha to Comoil to relieve the old pipeline that is overwhelmed and constantly encountering leakages and bursts.
Mayor Takanangana Keta confirmed the project to The Mirror. He said they began in April and expect to complete the pipeline before year end. He said they are using internal funds for the project.
“The sewer system in Zvishavane was constructed in 1923 to serve a few houses in Mandava area where Shabanie Mine retirees lived. The pipe line is to serve Northern wards of the town as ward 1, 4, 5 and 7.
“The current pipe was put in place in 1923 and is now old and cannot sustain the growing population. As a result of bursts and leakages raw sewer has been discharged into streams and this is a health and environmental hazard. We are constructing the main sewer trunk using internal funds,” he said.
He added that the local authority’s engineering department is constructing the pipeline.
Residents who spoke to The Mirror hailed the project. They said it will help create a clean environment free of sewerage smell and exposure to diseases.
