Zvishavane crime rate jumps 37%

ZVISHAVANE – The crime rate in Zvishavane jumped by 37% in the first nine months of this year compared to January to September 2021, Officer Commanding Midlands Province Commissioner Winston Muza has said.

He attributed the increase to the return to normalcy after the COVID-19 lockdown which limited movement of people last year.

The only crime that went down this year is rape which dropped by 12 from 76 to 64 cases

Commissioner Muza was speaking at the Zvishavane District Cop of the Year Awards held at Zvishavane Sports Ground recently

The cases rose from 3 761 in 2021 to 5 150 in 2022.

The rise in cases is as follows; unlawful entry rises from 487 to 702, stock theft 179 to 189, murder 17 to 22, armed robberies from 5 to 12 and robberies using other weapons 26 to 104. 

Rape cases however, dropped from 31 in 2021 cases to 28 in 2022 for adults and for juveniles they dropped from 45 to 36.

The Cop of the Year Awards are sponsored by Mimosa Mining Company and the objective is to recognize and acknowledge Police officers who are outstanding in their efforts to reduce crime in Zvishavane district which comprises of ZRP Buchwa camp, Mataga, ZRP Mberengwa, Zvishavane traffic, CID and ZRP Zvishavane.

The event was also attended by Officer Commanding Zvishavane District Chief Superintendent Martin Makusha, Mimosa General Manager Stephen Ndiyamba and Head of Human Resources George Mawere.

Zvishavane and Mberengwa were the most affected stations with crimes of concern such as murder, rape and armed robbery on the rise.
