ZVISHAVANE- Zvishavane Town Council has leased Mandava stadium to the platinum miners, Mimosa Mine for 25 years. This was revealed during a council assessment seminar held last week after the community demanded to use Mandava stadium for their social sporting activities.

The seminar held at Lions Club was organised by Nyasha Nyatondo of Poverty Reduction Forum Trust (PRFT) and Respect Tsvanhu of Farming Communities Education Trust (FACET) on Wednesday. The two organizations are carrying out assessments in Bulawayo, Zvishavane and Bikita on ways to reduce poverty in the country.

Mandava stadium used to be a community stadium, but it’s now leased to FC Platinum, a premier league team. FC Platinum which is sponsored by Mimosa Mine is now the sole user of the stadium since its inception in 2011. Maglas Stadium is the official home ground for Shabanie FC.

The community was left with no option but to look for other sporting facilities in the town. The only available soccer ground is Maglas B arena which is now in a bad state due to neglect. A swimming pool which used to be under the care of the Youth Centre is not an option either. It was also leased, and USD$2 paid to swim is prohibitive to unemployed youths.

Speaking to The Mirror, the town council vice-chairperson Charity Mundoka said that they are in the process of constructing another stadium.

“We know the shortage of sporting facilities in Zvishavane, but as we speak, we are in the process of constructing a stadium in Highlands. Mandava stadium was leased to FC Platinum for 25 years, ” she said.

PRFT was formed in 2008 with a mission to influence and formulate proper policies for sustainable development. It is conducting civil society voluntary local review consultations among councils. On the other hand, FACET is a Trust based in Mazowe, and its mandate is to educate the marginalized communities with special attention to farming communities.https://masvingomirror.com
