ZVISHAVANE – Zvishavane Town Council has put to good use Devolution funds after it used the proceeds to complete the construction and refurbishment of the Mabhula Sewer Treatment Plant in Magalas.
The treated effluent is being used for irrigation and mining purposes by the surrounding communities.
Zvishavane town council acting secretary Mungororo Mazai said the project worth more than US$400 000 took the local authority three years to complete following a dispute with the first contractor.
“We had a contractual dispute with the first contractor but now we are done with the project, we have started pumping raw sewer and filling up the tanks. All I can say is it’s up and running,” he said.
Zvishavane town engineer Munyaradzi Mageja noted that by design the plant is set to benefit the surrounding communities.
“The plant is capable of processing six mega litres of waste a day and we also engaged farmers downstream so they can use the treated effluent from for irrigation. Maglas Stadium and miners will benefit from this water “, said the engineer.
