ZRP cop wins GZU Open Chess

MASVINGO-Inspector Lumumba Chipuriro of Masvingo Province is the winner of the 2022 Edition of the Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) Open Chess Festival.

The festival was organised by the Chess Association of Masvingo and GZU. Chipuriro collected all points out of 6 games played at Flamboyant on Saturday.

The other sponsors of the event were Regency Group of Hotels, GZU and KwaJerry Kusadza Restaurant.

The tournament ran under the theme; Nurturing drug abstinence through chess.

The winner walked away with US$50 cash courtesy of Jerry Moyana. Chipuriro is also going to represent the Province in the National Police Sports to be held in Harare in April.

The tournament was put together to help the GZU Chess team prepare to defend its Zimbabwe University Sports Association (ZUSA) title at competitions billed to take place at NUST in Bulawayo this month.

Tawanda Moyo came second with 5 points followed by Nation Manyezero with 4.5 points.

Isaac Ndlovu from Mucheke High School was the best student player with 3 points and Loveness Zivanomoyo went away with the ladies’ best player with 4 points.

Moyana encouraged players to take the game seriously. 

He also offered a place for players to train from (Kwa Jerry Kusadza) as they sharpen their skills. The other venues offered for training are the sports Center and Flamboyant Hotel at the pool site. 

Present at the tournament was Masvingo Regency Groups of Hotel, Chief Executive Officer Edson Zvobgo Junior; tournament chairperson Jerry Moyana; tournament director, Masimba Mutakaya as well as GZU coach Phineas Ngatiyane. https://masvingomirror.com
