Zimuto high scoops prestigious African award

MASVINGO – Zimuto High School is the 2023 Pan African Universities Debate Competitions (PAUD NUTIFAFA) first runner ups outshining over 50 schools and universities in Lome, Togo recently. 

School head Harrison Mashava told The Mirror they contested against schools from countries as Botswana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gambia, Uganda, Tanzania, Togo, Liberia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Morocco, Kenya, Namibia and Ghana. 

He said the winning team comprised child vice president Theophilus Beans, Nicole Jirivengwa, Vespers Makhado and Solace Zunza. Beans recently invented a digital walking stick.

Zimbabwe was represented by Zimuto high, Chinhoyi University of Technology, Sustainable Environmental Conservation Trust Africa, High schools debate challenge and Belvedere Teachers College.

Nigeria had 13 learning institutions that contested. Togo has 16 learning institutions. Ghana had nine and South Africa had 7 universities.

One participant Vespers Makhado told The Mirror that the competitions were tough.

“The competitions were not easy and it was a tough task for us. We competed with University students and some of the topics that we were given were case studies in Nigeria, Niger and Togo. We were not familiar with those areas which were given to debate,” he said.
