Zim’s strongest man seeks financial assistance

MASVINGO – Zimbabwe’s strongest man Jonathan ‘Mr Mat’ Muvingi is appealing for US$1 500 to attend the 2021 Senior African Kurash Championships set for August 26-29 in Cameroon.

Muvingi who is a professional wrestler and power lifter is famously known for pulling train wagons and 30-tonne trucks using his shoulders and teeth.

Muvingi’s manager Brian Ganyani told The Mirror that the US$ 1500 is for air tickets, a visa, food, accommodation, participation fees and Covid-19 tests as participants are sponsoring themselves.

“Mr Mat is due to participate in the senior African Kurash Championships but we are facing financial challenges. The US$1 500 is for his air tickets and other basic provisions which will enable him to participate in the competitions,” said Ganyani.

African Kurash is a type of wrestling which is similar to Judo. The objective is to cleanly throw someone onto the ground and pin them or apply pressure on their joints until they yield.

Ganyani told The Mirror in an interview that they have tried to get assistance from the Zimbabwe National Wrestling Control Board without any success.

“They said that there is not much they can do but they can try to assist by spreading the word that we need help. The best would be to source for our own sponsorship,” said Ganyani.

The Championships will run from August 26 to 29, 2021. Participation fee is pegged at US$50, and accomodation is US$40 per night at a local hotel. Contestants are responsible for their own meals, transportation and visa requirements for the course of the tournament.

The Zimbabwe National Wrestling Control Board’s Human Resource Officer and Adminstrator, Li-Lin Maringamoyo said that the administration has not received any information from Muvingi’s team.

“If they spoke to someone, it could have been a misunderstanding between them and a member of the secretariat but as a board we have a way to approach such issues when our people want to travel for tournaments,” said Maringamoyo.

Those who wish to assist Mr. Mat by sponsoring his participation in the Championships next month may contact them on 0719 395 437 or 0777 395 437. https://masvingomirror.com
