ZESA exonerates workers from transformer thefts

MIRROR REPORTER

HARARE – Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) has exonerated its workers suspected to be the brains behind the rampant theft of transformers and vandalism of the power utility’s installations scattered around the country.

Many parts of Zimbabwe have experienced long-drawn blackouts as a result of the thefts from ZESA stations and the sentiments in the public domain is that the people with skills to tamper with high voltage installations are ZESA workers and therefore they should be the first suspects in the said crime.

ZESA marketing manager Prosper Mutswiri however, said results of investigations so far have not pointed to any ZESA employee. Instead it was the general members of the public.

He was speaking in an interview with The Mirror at the Zimbabwe Agricultural Show last week.

“Statistics and the reports we have seen so far suggest otherwise. Vandals are open to the public, we don’t hide anything because it’s a public issue. The names we have seen so far are not in any way linked to the organisation,” said Mutswiri.

He said Zesa has actually put in place measures to allow or encourage members of the public to report corruption or vandalism perpetrated by ZESA employees through a facility called Deloitte Tip-off Anonymous.

Deloitte Tip-off Anonymous is a platform managed by an independent professional company.

“If there is anything to do with a ZESA employee you send the company a message,” said Mutswiri.
