Zaka woman killed while gold panning

MASVINGO – Injuries and fatalities occurring due to gold panning activities are on the increase in Zaka following the death of Mavis Jakata (38) of Muzondidya Village under Chief Bota this week on Wednesday.

Ward 30 councillor, Fortune Maputsa con- firmed the incident in an interview with The Mirror and expressed concern at the increase in serious accidents happening at gold panning sites in the area.

He called on Government to intervene and do something about safety on these illegal mining sites.

Jakata died after the pit where she was working caved in and this was the fourth collapse of pits in weeks, said Maputsa. Several people were injured in the other three incidents.
