Zaka man murdered at 2am in bar over phone


MASVINGO -A man who was drinking beer was stabbed to death with a bottle on the neck, nose and right eye at around midnight at a night club close to Zaka Police Camp for allegedly stealing a mobile phone.

The incident happened at Simba Mukaka Night Club along Madhimoni Street at Jerera Growth Point on Tuesday at 2am.

Cyril Chitumba (25) was assaulted by Kudzai Siyawareva and Gladman Marufu of Chinoda Village under Chief Nhema on Monday evening for nearly an hour till he died.

Masvingo Police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa said he had not received the report by the time of going to Press.
The Mirror established that the matter has since been recorded under case number RRB 4628745.

Chitumba was assaulted with concrete bricks, farm bricks, a crutch and a wooden bench till he died. A broken bottle allegedly used to stab him on the eye, neck and nose was also recovered.

The bar owner Takunda Mupindu (29) was also arrested for defying the Covid-19 curfew regulations. Sources however, said beer was being sold through a window at the night club.

A Police memo in possession of The Mirror states that Marufu gave Chitumba a Bluetooth speaker and a Samsung A30 for safekeeping while they were drinking beer.

Marufu then asked the deceased for his gadgets from Chitumba who could not find the mobile phone.

The deceased drinking compatriot Armstrong Marava who is still at large joined Marufu and Siyawareva in assaulting him. Marava allegedly slapped him several times before disappearing.

Marufu then allegedly stabbed Chitumba on the neck, right eye and nose with a sharp object and went on to assault him with crutches, a wooden bench and concrete bricks.

The assault lasted for nearly an hour and Chitumba died due to injuries sustained during the attack.

An informant reported the matter to Zaka ZRP who attended the scene. Four concrete and one farm brick, pieces of wooden crutches, a bench and a broken bottle and a blood-stained cap were recovered at the scene.

Marufu and Siyawareva were positively identified by witnesses who were at the Club and arrested.
