Woman hides in sugarcane field after being chased by Police over stolen car

CHIREDZI – A Beitbridge woman allegedly hid in a sugarcane field in Chiredzi after Police chased her over a car stolen from South Africa which she was driving.
Martha Mbedzi (27) from Beitbridge appeared before Diana Masiiwa of Chiredzi Magistrates’ Court facing allegations of stealing a car from South Africa.
The stolen car is a white Renault Duster with South African registration number.
It is in the state case that on September 27, 2023 the car was parked at 155 Watermare Road South Africa and it disappeared that same night.
Mbedzi was then seen by ZRP driving the car along TangandaNgundu Road with her daughter.
An investigating detective on the matter from South Africa Jephry Berry Lucas (50) told the court that the vehicle was stolen from South Africa.
Berry Lucas said he received the report of a stolen vehicle from the ZRP that’s why he came to Zimbabwe to make further investigations.
Lucas confirmed that the car belongs to an old man from South Africa, and when the car was stolen the complainant reported to Silverton Police Station.
Winston Mabheka a CID at Triangle said on January 12 2024, he was told that there was a suspected stolen car coming along Tanganda-Ngundu Road.
ZRP police proceeded to a roadblock at the 77km peg. They saw the car approaching with no number plates. Police tried to stop the car, but the driver proceeded and she was given a chase.
The car gradually turned into a cane field and stopped. When Police arrived they found the driver’s door open with no one inside the car.
After a search Police found Mbedzi hiding with her daughter in the cane field. Mbedzi’s handbag was recovered from the car and number plates which were removed from the car were found
under the seats.
Mbedzi was remanded out of custody to 17 April 2024.
