SHURUGWI – A Shurugwi woman who married her daughter to a suitor and received lobola without the knowledge of her husband has appeared in court facing domestic violence charges.
Nyarai Gatsi (45) appeared before Shurugwi Magistrate Sithabile Zungula on Wednesday for assaulting her husband Witness Mupa (45) who had confronted her over the daughter’s marriage.

The Mirror understands that the couple is on separation but the two stay at the same house at 271 Cape street, Shurugwi with Gatsi living in the front rooms while Mupa stays at the back.
After appearing in court on Wednesday Gatsi returned to court yesterday pleading for the withdrawal of the case. It is understood that he was put under pressure by his wife to drop the charges.

Magistrate Zungula rejected the application and it is understood this is because the couple has many cases at the local Police Station where Gatsi beats up her husband.
Ironically the accused is employed at Zesa as a customer care clerk, the Mirror is told.
Prosecutor Kwanele Njini said on May 2, 2022 at around 6pm the complainant went to his wife’s place and asked why she caused their daughter to be married in his absence and without his knowledge.

Gatsi allegedly got angry, strangled her husband beat him up before pushing him outside the house.
Gatsi was remanded out of custody and the case will proceed on Wednesday next week.
