GWERU – Whawha Prison is appealing for roofing materials from well-wishers after heavy rains and strong winds blew up the roofs of nine cells on Sunday.
The destruction has left inmates overcrowded and with possible escape routes.

Whawha Medium Prison Officer in Charge, Superintendent Tineyi Makeredza, told The Mirror that 100 inmates had to be relocated to overcrowded cells.
“Over 100 prisoners had to be moved to other cells. Our carrying capacity is 1,200 and we already had 1 460 prisoners, meaning we were overcrowded. The situation has been worsened by this unfortunate incident,” he said.

Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) Midlands Deputy Officer Commanding, Assistant Commissioner Clemence Chigogo said over 20 families were also affected by the hailstorm. He said they were still assessing the damage across the province.
” This is the second time we have experienced such. It happened in 2016. We did not anticipate this and as such we asked for materials from the corporate world,” he said.
Chigogo added that alternative accommodation for affected officers and families has been provided.
