Will Mtirikwi Dam finally overspill after 19 years?

MASVINGO –Prospects of Mtirikwi Dam over spilling for the time in 19 years are high as the rainy season has begun with the dam 93.6% full according to dam levels released by Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa).

The dam levels released on November 2, 2022 also state that Kariba Dam where the country generates most of its electricity is at its lowest at 9.1%. Kariba Dam was 12 % full on November 22, 2022.

Mtirikwi Dam was 99.7% full when the 2021-2022 rainy season ended.

The Meteorological Department has also forecasted normal to above normal rains from November 2022– January 2023.

A national seasonal rainfall forecast for the 2022-23 season released to The Mirror by Met Department head of Public Weather Services James Ngoma 

“Increased chances of normal-to-above normal rains expected. This means that the expected rains from November 2022 till January 2023 have a high probability to be within the long-term average with a slight inclination of exceeding this long-term average,” reads the statement.  

The largest inland dam, Tugwi-Mukosi which overspills every year is 91.7% full while Manyuchi Dam is 86.1% full. Manjirenji Dam in Zaka is 59.2% full.
