Gweru – Gweru City Council finally commissioned a brand new US$176 000 luxury Toyota Landcuiser VX bought for the former town clerk Elizabeth Gwatipedza in 2018 at a time when all refuse collection trucks have broken down.
The car could not be commissioned for the last three years because of an outcry from residents over the extravagance.
Mayor Joshua Makombe said after the outcry council wanted to sell away the car and buy a cheaper car but the local authority could not get a buyer ready to buy the vehicle for its market price.
The car will now be used by the town clerk and mayor.
Gweru Residents and Ratepayers Association director Cornilia Selipiwe accused council of buying expensive cars for managers and second hand cars for service delivery.
Residents said that the rates that they pay are literally being used to look after the lofty lifestyles of council managers. https://masvingomirror.com
