We will name and shame debtors–warns Maboke

MASVINGO – Faced with a ballooning debt owed by corporates, individuals and Government Departments, Masvingo Mayor, Collen Maboke has warned that he will soon resort to naming and shaming bad debtors.

He said residents and companies perennially complain against poor service delivery and yet that situation is caused by non-payment of rates.

He said this on Thursday during a full council meeting, the first to be attended by newly elected CCC councilors.

“Residents are blaming us for poor service delivery and yet they are not paying rates. Sometimes when the bills are eventually paid, the money is worthless because of inflation.

“We should name and shame these debtors so that residents know who to blame for failed timely service delivery. This will also force these institutions to pay their rates in time to avoid being shamed,” declared Maboke.

Masvingo City is owed a whopping $707, 9 million as of February 28, 2022 with institutional debt totaling $202, 9 million.

Masvingo United Residents and Ratepayers Association (MURRA) director, Anoziva Muguti supported Maboke’s stance.

“MURRA is in full support of the mayor’s stance to name and shame defaulters as this is destroying the local authority’s capacity to give quality service to residents.

“Council should use the media to name and shame the culprits, maybe we can end up getting better service delivery,” said Muguti.
