CHIREDZI – A Chiredzi Teenager is luck to be alive after he was hit by a sugarcane train this morning while walking with earphones stuffed in his ears.

He lost his right leg and right hand and the crashed pieces were still at the scene when The Mirror arrived soon after the accident. The boy was ferried to Chiredzi District Hospital.

The incident happened at 7am as the boy walked at the railway station near Tshovani Stadium.

Masvingo Provincial Police Spokesperson, Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the accident.

Sources said the train driver sounded the siren when he saw the boy but this was to no avail as the boy continued to walk near the railway line without hearing the train.

“The train’s siren wailed but the boy could not hear it as he had earphones stuffed in his ears,” said a railway worker who declined to be named.

“I received a message on the accident but I am yet to receive details,” said Dhewa.

When The Mirror visited the scene, the boy had already been taken to Chiredzi general hospital but remains of his right leg and hand were still at the scene.
