GWERU – Vungu Rural District Council (RDC) has proposed a ZWL$48 billion budget for 2024.

The local authority’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Alex Magura told a full council meeting on Friday that the budget is increasing from ZWL$1.1 billion. He said the budget would prioritise unfinished projects.

“We are proposing a ZWL$48 billion budget inclusive of Government grants and an expected internal revenue of ZWL$27 billion.

“The Council intends to carry out water provision projects, health, education and road infrastructure. We are looking at continuing some unfinished projects,” he said.

Magura added that they plan on constructing a clinic in Ward 18, rehabilitating a piped water scheme in the Ruby area in Ward 15 and drilling boreholes at several schools.

The local authority had a 30% budget performance as of October 20, 2023, and Magura urged ratepayers to settle their water and rates bills.

“The 2023 budget performed dismally at 30 % as of 30 October 2023. For devolution funds, only 25 % of the allocation was received. This meant that most planned projects could not take off.

“The general economic environment has posed challenges which have impacted negatively on council operations. Low revenue inflows have made it difficult for the council to realise its plans. In addition, low disbursement of Government grants has had the same impact,” he said.
