CHIKOMBA—A veld fire has left a 72-year-old Chikomba woman homeless after gutting all her thatched houses and grain storage.
Gogo Viola Gora of Unyetu in Chikomba East lost her homestead as she was attending a funeral service at her brother’s homestead in a neighbouring village.
The fire razed down her homestead on Wednesday last week around 1 pm. She is currently staying at her relative’s place.
Her niece Christina Magaya confirmed the tragedy to the Mirror. She appealed for assistance from well-wishers.
Christina also said that Gogo Gora was staying with three grandchildren who also needed clothes, food and shelter.
“My granny’s huts were gutted by a veld fire. There was no one at home. All her valuables were destroyed. We are appealing to well-wishers to assist her in rebuilding her homestead, and provide clothes and foodstuffs,” she said.
Environmental Management Agency (EMA) Mashonaland East Education and Publicity Officer Astas Mabwe urged community leaders to report veld fires to the police and EMA.
He added that EMA will conduct investigations to determine where the fire came from.
“As EMA we urge community leaders to quickly report veld fires to the Police and EMA. We also urge members of the public to construct fire guards so that they can protect their properties from veld fires,” said Mabwe
