CHIPINGE-The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) has partnered Chipinge Town Council in a ZWL$1.2 billion project to upgrade the town’s water reticulation system.
Acting town secretary James Mutemera confirmed the development to Chipinge Times and said the project began in October 2022 and will be completed by May this year.
He also said the project will include the construction of pipelines from 300mm to 500mm to increase the capacity of raw water carried to the treatment plant and the rehabilitation works which include filter construction which will increase the volume of water supplied from 5 mega litres to 10 mega litres a day.
Chipinge Town requires 9 mega litres of water daily but had perennial water challenges such that high density areas would go for days without tap water.
“We are working with our partner UNOPS who have since poured a total of ZWL $1.2 billion in water reticulation system upgrade. This will benefit about 35 000 Chipinge residents. The scope of work includes enlarging the raw water pipelines carrying capacity from 300mm to 500mm. It also includes filter construction which will increase volume of treated water from 5 to 10 mega litres.
“This will definitely increase the water carrying capacity. We have since purchased two more pumps to increase water volume. We are also repairing and upgrading storage tanks,” said Mutemera.
