MASVINGO-A Shamva-based soccer outfit, Simba Bhora, clinched the Independence trophy played in Masvingo yesterday after beating the hosts Masvingo United 1-0 in a hotly contested match. It was a huge blow for Masvingo United who desperately needed to win the cup but went on to lose despite having an upper hand. Masvingo United dominated the greater part of the game but missed some crucial chances that could have tilted the game in their favour.

The game brought memories of glory days when Mucheke stadium used to host Premier League matches. Simba Bhora had former soccer legends that included Hardlife Zvirekwi, a former Caps United player and Soccer Star of the year 2016, Dexter Phiri a former ZPC Kariba gun man while Takesure Chinyama, a former Dynamos player who once had a stint with Orlando Pirates donned a Una Una jersey.

It was Tinashe ‘Maswera’ Balakazi  the Simba Bhora gunman who frustrated Una Una’ s aspirations when he scored a 70-minute goal after dribbling past Una Una’s water tight defence.

Una Una’s sensational Hillary Bakacheza hogged the limelight with his dribbling prowess much to the delight of the Masvingo crowd, but failed to breach the Simba Bhora defence that managed to keep the marauding player at bay.

Simba Bhora head coach Arthur ‘Tutsi’ Tutani admitted that his opponents played better than his ensemble but unfortunately they did not maximise their chances as is needed on a cup game.

“I say tough lucky for Una Una, they played well. But it’s unfortunate that they did not score. A cup game requires maximum utilisation of chances. I am glad that we got only one chance and managed to bury it” said Tutani.

The prizes were handed over by Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs Ezra Chadzamira. The prize money and jerseys were sponsored by aspiring Zanu PF Masvingo Urban aspirant, James ‘The Big Deal’ Pande. Go Buju Go as Simba Bhora is affectionately known by its fans stole the limelight after walking away with a US$1000 cash prize and a trophy while Una Una got a $500 consolation prize and a trophy.
