Masvingo United affectionately known by a legion of its fans as Una Una which was still smarting from a 1-0 defeat in the Independence trophy match by a star-studded Shamva-based Simba Bhora FC fired all cylinders and brushed aside Surrey FC 2-0.
Marondera-based outfit managed to hold Una Unas marauding strikers that missed several glaring chances at bay until the breather during a mid-week match played yesterday at Mucheke Stadium. The pendulum continued to swing from one end to the other with Surrey missing two set pieces in the thirty fifth minute and five minute before the break.
It however, the sensational pint-sized Hillary Bakacheza changed the tempo of the game with his dribbling wizardry and fine runs on the left flank. It was Bakacheza who set up Tinotenda Potato Zivanai 20 minutes from the stoppage time after roasting the hapless Surrey FC defenders. Zivanai made not mistake and fired home the teams first goal.
This was after Potato also dribbled past two defenders leaving one of them who tried a sliding tackle injured and had to be substituted after suffering a dislocation on the right arm. Una Una continued to press forward as they seek another goal forcing the Surrey defenders to back pedal for the greater part of the game.
Three minutes later Bakacheza again set up Roland ‘Rooney’ Makiwa a former Shabanie Mine FC player who beat his marker to the ball and dribbled past Surrey FC goalie leaving him sprawling on the floor before effortlessly tapping the ball into an empty net.
After the game Masvingo United who managed to narrow the gap between them and log leaders Mutare FC from seven points to four points are now bubbling with confidence as they are now title contenders.
Before Masvingo United was relegated from the top tier over a decade ago, big names in the Zimbabwean football coaching fraternity were at one time at the helm of the team. Some of the names on the list of gaffers that once coached Una Una include Charles Mhlauri who had an unsuccessful stint as head coach for Masvingo United.
Mhlauri left Masvingo United facing relegation. Fewdays Musonda, the late Lovemore Nyabeze (twice), Angirayi Chapo, Saul Chaminuka, Tavaka Gumbo (as caretaker coach) and Luke Vahombe Masomere are notable past coaches for Masvingo United.https://masvingomirror.com/
