MASVINGO AGRIC SHOW – The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) has produced a simplified guide for children to learn road safety rules.

The guide works hand in hand with the upgraded version of the highway which has new road signs that drivers have to observe.

The children’s Highway Guide will impart knowledge to young children to be safe especially when they go to school. It teaches children on how to cross at a junction, at traffic lights and how to observe road rules when riding a bicycle.

TSCZ which is one of the organizations exhibiting at the ongoing Masvingo Provincial Agriculture Show is distributing the guide for free to school children around the country.

Rosewell Gumbochuma an educator with the council said his organisation is determined to reduce carnage on the roads and is doing several programs including defensive driving training for drivers and instructors.

The organisation is running under the theme “Promoting Development for Economic Growth through strategic road safety”.

He said human error remains the single biggest contributing factor for road accidents and 95% of accidents are preventable.

“Road safety is a priority and children must be taught about the importance of road safety from a tender age. Most accidents are caused by human error. We are doing our best to train drivers about the importance of defensive driving as well as teaching children on how to protect themselves when walking in the roads,” said Gumbochuma.

He advised people to avoid travelling during peak hours or attempting to cross flooded rivers as well as checking the condition of their vehicles before travelling to minimise accidents.
