CHIPINGE -Chipinge Rural District Council (RDC) is constructing an Early Childhood Development (ECD) classroom block at Tongogara Primary School.
Council Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Blessing Mamvosha said the project began in February this year and is expected to be complete by mid-May 2023.
He said the ZWL$ 70 million project is being funded by the devolution fund.
Tongogara Primary is near Tongogara Refugee Camp.
“We are building a three-classroom block at Tongogara Primary School and the project is at roof level. Our target for the project was ZWL $60 million but there are some variations on labour and the exchange rate. We are now going to spend ZWL $70 million.
“It’s part of our combined strategic plan that we did in 2020. We identified the need for more classes at the school. Our target is that we should hand over the classroom block on International Refugee Day in June,” said Mamvosha.
He added that the local authority has engaged the community to participate in the project.
“That is our policy as the council. We have employed locals to do the basic work. The community is part of this project,” he said.
Camp administrator Johanne Mhlanga said the project is a response to a plea made last year to increase the number of classroom blocks at the school.
He said the school has an enrollment of 2 273 pupils.
“We are grateful to Chipinge RDC which saw it prudent to channel devolution funds to Tongogara Refugee Camp. We have a strategic plan that we are implementing and decongesting Tongogara Primary School which has 2 273 children is a key area.
“We aim to establish an infant school which will accommodate ECD up to grade 2 pupils. The idea is to create a child-friendly environment for the refugee children and children from the host community,” said Mhlanga.
Chipinge RDC is working on various infrastructure projects through devolution funds and these include Jambanda Bridge which was completed last month, Junction Gate Clinic mothers shelter which is awaiting electrification and plumbing and the Maongere Clinic staff house which is almost complete.
