CHIREDZI–Tongaat Hullet planted 600 hectares of winter wheat this season and harvested 1 550 tonnes of the crop in a bid to support the country’s food security.

The project which is part of the company’s social corporate responsibility is done annually in conjunction with Government and Masvingo Development Trust. The harvest was delivered to GMB on Monday.

“We dedicated 600 ha of our land in Mwenezana Estates to wheat crop so that we contribute to the country and this was done through our public private partnership.

” We delivered 1550 tonnes of wheat to GMB which is quite a commendable output and we are happy as a company that we are contributing to the country,” said Tongaat head of Agriculture, Norman Maisiri.

He however, bemoaned a huge loss of the crop to the quelea birds which he said was a big menace.

“We faced challenges from the quelea birds to the extent that we had to call Parks and Wildlife to intervene but to no avail. We however adopted the traditional way of using scare crows and the method was better although we lost a lot of wheat to the birds,” said Maisiri.

GMB depot manager Edmore Matiza hailed THZ for the contribution and urged farmers to plant their winter wheat by May 31 of each year.

“May 31 is the last day of planting winter wheat to avoid destruction of the crop by the rains,” said Matiza.

Tongaat has contributed thousands of tonnes of maize under the same programme in 2017, 2019 and 2020. In 2021, the company grew wheat.
