Time bomb as unregistered gas vendors increase in Masvingo

MASVINGO – Masvingo Mayor, Aleck Tabe has expressed concern over the increase in the number of illegal liquefied petroleum (LP) gas vendors in residential areas.
He told a full council meeting on Monday that the unregulated operations are a ticking time bomb because gas is highly flammable. The vendors are untrained in the handling of gas, and they operate near houses and shopping centres.
“I am worried about illegal gas vendors. This is a danger to community.
“Who will be held responsible if they burn down houses or cause deaths? We must give them notice to stop their operations or regularize with relevant authorities,” said Tabe.
LP gas traders are required to register with the local authority, the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) for a hazardous substance license and get an operating license from the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA).
Ward 9 Councillor Bernard Muchokwa however, said the matter must be handled with empathy because there is 95% unemployment in Zimbabwe.
“Let’s be sensitive as 95% of the population is unemployed and are vendors. We should allocate them space to sell their wares before we remove them,” he said. Health, Housing and Environmental Services Committee chairperson, Maxwell Madhuna said they require more municipal officers to patrol suburbs and dismantle illegal LP gas vending sites. A gas explosion killed three people in Chikombedzi in December last year. Six shops were destroyed, and five other people were severely wounded.
