BUHERA – Three suspected armed robbers, Simon Jingo (38), Peter Kasu (28) and Kudakwashe Chavhunduka (25) were nabbed at a roadblock by Dorowa Police in Buhera as they drove in a Mazda Titan which they allegedly stole a few days earlier.
A 303 rifle, machetes, 2 okapi knives, handcuffs, screw drives and a Police identity card were recovered from the suspects.
The trio who were driving in the yet to be registered car went through the roadblock mounted at Wedza turnoff, along Nyazura – Chivhu Highway without stopping.
Police pursued them and sensing danger, the robbers stopped their car, bolted out and fled in different directions. There was a fierce scuffle as the robbers who used knives tried to avoid arrest. Two robbers sneaked away and disappeared.
One of the robbers was beaten to it when he tried to pull out a gun from a satchel, an eyewitness told Chipinge Times.
Manicaland Assistant Police spokesperson Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident and told Chipinge Times that the trio is detained at Mutare Central Police and will appear in court soon. The Officer-in-Charge at Dorowa, Inspector Malvern Mukono declined to comment on the incident.
Other items recovered from the vehicle are three generators, submersible pumps, electric cable, 4 cellphones, vehicle documents and two digital pocket scales.
The recovered Police identity card belonged to Museve T and there was also force number 062756.
Sources said that the vehicle was robbed at a Broksville Farm Plot number 23 in Penhalonga.
Chipinge Times understands that on Sunday at 4am, Police mounted a routine road block to search vehicles. A Mazda Titan vehicle with a temporary number plate 137963 approached the check point with five people on board.
The vehicle did not stop despite being flagged down. Police made a chase and the suspects tried to dump the vehicle and run away. Verifications were made on the recovered items and Police picked the vehicle had been reported stolen at gunpoint in Penhalonga on Saturday.
Albert Marongero, an eye witnesses said the scuffle between the robbers and Inspector Malvern Mukono and Constable Nyaradzo Muzhona was scary. They exchanged blows with the robbers who pulled out knives and even attempted to use a gun.
“I can confirm we arrested three robbers and they will go to court after investigations are concluded,” said Chinyoka.
