Students can pay full fees in $ZWL – GZU changes position

MASVINGO – Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) has reversed its decision to have 50% of undergraduate students fees paid exclusively in US$ and has extended the registration period to April 19, 2024.
A letter signed by GZU registrar Sinikiwe Gwatidzo addressed to Matutu and Mureri Legal Practitioners dated April 2, confirms the position. The letter states that Zimbabwe is a multi-currency economy and students can pay their fees in either currency.
“As a multi-currency economy, students are welcome to pay in any of the acceptable currencies in the country. The University further advises that the registration deadline for the current semester has been extended to April 19, 2024.
“In the meantime we shall post this message to all student portals advising them of the same,” reads part of the letter.
GZU spokesperson Anderson Chipatiso could not be reached for comment.
The reversal comes eight hours after a Politics and Public Management student Shadreck Chidyamakuni filed an urgent chamber application at the High Court in Masvingo yesterday compelling GZU to accept fees payments in ZWL$.
Chidyamakuni and Darlington Matola initially wrote a letter to GZU dated March 25, 2024, through their lawyer Martin Mureri demanding that the institution reverses the 50% fees payment in US$ and extends the registration period.
GZU had given students a 14 day registration period that expired on March 28, after which a US$10 daily penalty would be charged.
