MASVINGO-Stray and unleashed dogs in Masvingo will be shot on site from May 8, 2023, acting Masvingo City director of health services Sithabile Matava has said.
She said the week-long dog tie-up program is running until May 17, 2023, in conjunction with the Veterinary Services Department, the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).
Matava said it is an annual program to curb the spread of rabies in the city.
“We will shoot all stray dogs to curb the spread of rabies in the city, and we expect all dog owners to fence their houses and always have leashes to avoid the dogs from straying outside the yard.
“I appeal to all dog owners to get their pets vaccinated so that they will not transmit rabies to humans if they bite them. The program is done annually but stopped owing to COVID-19,” said Matava.
