Stock thief escapes from Masvingo Remand

MASVINGO – An inmate serving three years for stock theft will now serve four years after he was slapped with another year for escaping from Masvingo Remand Prison.

Luckson Mavasa of Village 9, Merivale Resettlement, under Chief Chitanga was given a further one year by Magistrate Mbonisi Ndlovu at Masvingo Magistrates Court last week.

Mavasa escaped from prison in June and was caught in Ngundu where he was implicated in yet another theft case.
Edmund Mapope for the State said Mavasa escaped on June 17, 2020 at around 4 a.m after he was tasked to light a fire for cooking. He was released together with another inmate who noticed his absence and notified prison wardens.

A search was conducted to no avail until a report was made at Masvingo Central police station.

Mavasa told the court that he escaped because he was afraid of being assaulted by prison wardens because some food stuffs had gone missing from the kitchen a week before.
