State given 2 hours to produce cop in Kurauone case

MASVINGO – A Masvingo Magistrate, Patience Madondo has given the State two hours to produce a cop who is a key witness in MDC A youth leader Godfrey Kurauone’s court case.

Kurauone is charged with obstructing traffic in Mashava on July 31 2020, the day called for national demonstrations against corruption. He has been in prison for almost a month now after being denied bail.

Kurauone’s lawyer, Philip Shumba of Mutendi, Mudisi and Shumba complained in court that the case was not making progress because a key State witness, Carryon Muguta who is also a Police officer with CID Law and Order has been defaulting court hearings thereby forcing the trial to be postponed.

Muguta failed to attend court again this morning and this forced Madondo to adjourn at 12:40pm and order Police to bring him by 2:15pm.

Muguta is the second witness in the case in which Kurauone is alleged to have blocked 500m of Mashava- Chirumhanzu Road using stones and boulders.

“This court will adjourn at 2:15 pm. The State has until then to bring forth its witness,” said Magistrate Madondo.
The other lawyers representing Kurauone are Martin Mureri, Omen Mafa and Derick Charamba.

The State led by Innocent Mbambo said Muguta was attending a funeral but defense lawyers who discussed the matter later outside court said that Muguta was seen having drinks at Nemamwa Growth Point at the time that the case was in session.
