SHURUGWI – Shurugwi Residents and Ratepayers Association is calling on the local authority to construct a pen to hold livestock straying in suburbs and in the Central Business District (CBD).
The association’s chairperson Bulle Madzitira told The Mirror that stray livestock is vandalizing gardens, making noises at night and the environs don’t resemble a town.
He added that some residents stay up all night chasing the beasts away from their gardens.
“In 2021 council committed to solving the problem by constructing a cattle pen where all straying cattle would be kept and auctioned if unclaimed by such a timeframe but nothing has materialized up till now.
“We call upon the office of the District Development Coordinator (DDC) and Chiefs to engage resettled farmers and encourage them to take care of their cattle,” said Madzitire.
Shurugwi Town chairperson Fanuel Machiya said that they are in the process of consulting farms over a by-law to address the issue.
“We have a draft by-law to address the issue that we are submitting for approval. In the meantime we are engaging farmers around the town encouraging them keep their animals,” said Machiya.
