Shurugwi – Shurugwi District Development Co-ordinator (DDC), Langton Mupeta has summoned 65 illegal settlers at Hilingden Farm under Chief Banga and told them to vacate the area before Police is called in to push them out.

He said this at a meeting for all villagers living at Hilingden Farm held at his offices in Shurugwi on Monday. The meeting was attended by the Police and officials from the Ministry of Lands.

The move to flush out illegal settlers from the farm follows complaints of overpopulation and overgrazing at Hilingden. The farm has 35 properly resettled farmers and 65 who came outside Government programmes.

The Mirror attended the meeting and it emerged that the 65 bought the land from village committee members and the District administrator ordered the committees to refund the illegal settlers their money. He warned the committee members that they will face the full wrath of the law.

Some of the areas infected with illegal settlers are Chironde, Gutsaruzhinji, Mponda, Msasa and Dandavari.
Ward 19 councilor, Brian Chiteme expressed concern at the situation created by the illegal settlers.

“We appeal to the Ministry of Lands to evict all illegal settlers before the situation gets worse. We no longer have grazing land because they have been occupied, the river banks are occupied and even passages to the dip tanks have been closed,” said Chiteme.

“Whatever was built outside Government programmes must be demolished. All those who paid money to the committee should claim their money back,” said Mupeta. https://masvingomirror.com
