Shurugwi – A yet to be established number of graves are going to be exhumed and bodies reburied to allow the expansion of Shurugwi Town Fortune Marevesa, the housing director has said.

Some people in the area are also going to be moved as well.

An application by the town council for the exhumation has since been made for the Impali graves at Penchen Farm in Ward 18.

Ward 18 councillor and Shurugwi Town Council chairman Golden Kapeta also confirmed the development and said the exhumations are necessary for the growth of the town.

Impali area is a small location which was occupied by Anglo- American company. The area also got occupied by new farmers at the onset of the land reform programme.

Marevesa said the project is at its first stage of consultations with all stakeholders including the affected residents.

“We are yet to establish the number of households and the graves to be exhumed. We started by consulting the National Museum. Our aim is expanding Shurugwi Town and we need more residential stands. We will engage the affected residents and compensate them. The bodies will be exhumed, relocated and reburied,” said Marevesa.

Kapeta said although the relocations are coming, the first priority will be compensation to those that will be affected. He said an option of a residential stand will also be given to them.

Taurai Murashiki who is also affected by the developments said they were not against the development but they needed compensation to be considered first.https://masvingomirror.com
