MASVINGO-Shine Shine Queens FC, the sole female soccer team plying its trade in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) from Masvingo held its player awards ceremony at Flamboyant hotel on Friday last week.

Minister for State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs Ezra Chadzamira who is the club patron was the guest of honour. He was represented by the Director of Economics and Development in his office Clever Chingwara.

The team’s head coach cum secretary general Takaendesa Mavesere gave an emotional speech detailing the arduous journey that the team endured to make it to the top.

All award winners walked away with medals.

Club captain Plaxedes Mushandu scooped two medals, Best Player and Most Disciplined. The golden boot award went to Mavis Kanengoni. Chiyedza Dondofema was named Best Defender and Paula Simwanja scooped the Goalkeeper of the season award.

Vice-captain Rosemary Mkandla was named upcoming player and Pretty Mbwende a 12 year old Grade 6 student got the youngest player award.

Shine Shine Queens won the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) Eastern Region Division 1 2021-22 season league burdened with financial woes

Mavesere applauded the girls for their resilience during the thorny season as they would sometimes sleep on empty bellies or sleep in a single room when they travelled for away games.

“I would like to applaud the girls for their resilience, it was not an easy journey for them. Sometimes the whole squad would share a small single room when we travelled for away games or eat a banana before a game but they managed to come out tops,” Mavesere said.

Chadzamira appealed to the Masvingo business community to sponsor the girls who have brought top flight football back in the province.

“It is my honour to preside over this awards giving ceremony which is the first of its kind and it comes at an ideal time when our Government’s drive is to ensure 100% recognition of women in all their fields of endeavour.

“The team is the first female team in the province that has made history by making into PSL, and I am proud to be part of this initiative. As the club embarks on its new football journey, let me appeal to all stakeholders to come on board and be part of this initiative which seeks to fully empower the girl child,” said Chadzamira.

The club presented Chadzamira with three jerseys, one for President Emmerson Mnangagwa the other for the First lady and Chadzamira’s.

Chadzamira’s jersey stole the lime light as it was written CR7 to represent his initials Chadzamira Ruvai.
