MASVINGO – The Great Zimbabwe Rally continues to grow from strength to strength after attracting 150 bikers from across Africa from 40 last year, Titanium Motorcycle Club President Terrence Kwaramba has said.
This year’s edition of the rally was held from Friday to Sunday and the bikers were camped at Flamboyant, a Regency Group Hotel.
The rally is held annually between March-April.
Though the rally was expecting 400 participants who had initially shown interest in taking part in this year’s event, Kwaramba said 150 participants officially registered marking a phenomenal increase from last year’s 40 participants.
He said he is happy that the event has become a regional attraction and a major tourism booster in Masvingo after partnering with the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) which saw the bikers cap this year’s event with a mass ride to Lake Mutirikwi and the Great Zimbabwe Monuments.
“I am happy with the success of this year’s event which has made significant improvements as it has attracted more regional participants and has shown our shift from being mere funny seekers to indispensable promoters of tourism in Masvingo,” said Kwaramba.
He also thanked the partners and participants for allowing the organization to make a bigger donation of sanitary wear to the needy throughout the province and groceries to Alpha Cottages Children’s Home.
Some of this year’s edition partners included First Link Insurance Brokers, Econet Wireless and Vision Plus Wealth.
Saturday’s street carnival was followed by a party at Flamboyant Hotel.
Ngangira said there has been a considerable improvement in participants from the region especially from South Africa and Botswana.
“We are happy that the event is growing bigger with each passing year and is being recognized across the region. It is not only for fun, but a way to help the less privileged through biking,” said Kwaramba.
The edition also had several competitions held on Saturday and winners received various accolades including certificates.
