HARARE-Kwekwe based-Russell Primary School has been crowned the 2022 winners of the Zimbabwe Agricultural Society- Zimbabwe Wildlife Conservation Primary Schools quiz competition.

The competition was held yesterday at the ongoing Zimbabwe Agricultural Show.

Each province was represented by three schools which means there were 30 competitors in the quiz.

The other top schools were St Joseph from Rusape which came second, Mvuma Primary School came third while Filabusi and Esigodini came fourth and fifth respectively.

The first three schools scored as follows, Russell   57 points, St Joseph 56 points and Mvuma 55 points.

For winning the competition, Russell Primary School got two laptops, a trophy, and a water tank. Learners got USD $15, T shirts, a reading book, ruler, pen and pencil. Teachers received USD $15.  Learners and teachers also got certificates of participation each.

Tendai Makura from Russell Primary School said it was a stiff competition.

“It was a stiff competition and we only beat St Joseph by a point despite us being the current champions of Wildlife Environmental Zimbabwe. We had little time to prepare. I started grooming my participants since Grade five. My team comprises of two grade 6, one grade 7 and one grade 3 pupils. As a school we have been competing in wildlife quiz for five years. I did not expect us to win. We just told ourselves that we will go to learn. It was also our first time to compete in this competition. The team comprises of Captain Thompson Kwangwari, Zoe Ranganai, Maitaishe Matukudu and Vimbai Makaza.I have Rukudzo Mashumba, one of the teachers at the school who has greatly assisted the children,” she said.

St Joseph Primary School teacher Longina Duri said it was their first time to participate in the competition.

“I had four participants namely Yolanda Mwaturura, Joseph Jakouras, Audrey kadeya and Anesu Kazembe. It was out first time to attend the agricultural show quiz.  The given areas were too broad.

“The questions themselves were challenging and both learners and teachers could feel the heat. This made our learners to lose confidence and had no hope. As a result of this there was no longer team work as they realized that they would get three consecutive answers wrong, however, at the end of it all we managed to sail through,” she said.
