GWERU-Government has entered into a partnership with Road Trackers Construction (RTC) for the rehabilitation of the 43 km Shurugwi-Mhandamabwe Road.
Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa made the announcement during a recent post-cabinet press briefing.
She said the year-long project is expected to commence soon and involves the construction and widening of the road.
“Government has partnered with Road Trackers Construction to start Shurugwi – Mhandamabwe Road rehabilitation. The project scope will include construction, upgrading and widening of the 43 km Shurugwi-Mhandamabwe road which links Beitbridge Border Post with Gweru, Kwekwe, Chegutu, Kadoma, Chinhoyi, Karoi and Chirundu Border Post. The work will be carried out over a period of 12 months,” she said.
The road was constructed by a Chinese Company in the early 1990s and the company was accused of doing a shoddy job.
Mutsvangwa also said that mining companies would be requested to assist in road maintenance especially of the roads they use to lessen the burden on Government.
The development comes at a time when Shurugwi residents have expressed disappointment over failure by Chinese miners operating in the district for failure to rehabilitate roads as part of their Social Corporate Responsibility (CSR).
