Retracing roots: Manyuchi to defend title in Masvingo

MASVINGO –World Boxing Federation (WBF) Champion Charles Manyuchi (32) will defend his title against Muhamad Sebyala of Uganda at Flamboyant hotel in Masvingo on July 3, 2021 as an appreciation to the city which nurtured his career.

Manyuchi told journalists recently that he will go toe to toe against little known Sebyala in the city where his career began 12 years ago.

The match was initially slated for April 2020 in Harare but was affected by the Covid-19 lockdown.

The title bout which also has the World Alliance Boxing Association (WABA) title on the line is Masvingo’s first international title bout and Manyuchi’s first fight since 2012 when he went head-to-head against Silas Mandeya in a none title match.

“Fighting for a title in Masvingo feels exciting. It is a way of paying back to a community that made me. I began my career in Masvingo in 2009 and have come this far,” said Manyuchi.

The title bout will also see two boxers from the Charles Manyuchi academy, Tinashe Majoni (super fly weight) and Evans Husayiwevhu (lightweight) take to the ring against foreign opponents.

Manyuchi clinched the WBF middle-weight title on September 28, 2019 against Diego Gallardo.

The fevered boxer relocated to Chivhu from Masvingo but has several title holding boxers under the Charles Manyuchi Boxing Academy from the Ancient City as Dennis ‘Boyka’ Denes and Tinashe Majoni.
