Prize galore at Masvingo district merit awards



MASVINGO – Over 20 primary and secondary schools in Masvingo district received prizes at the district Merit Awards held at the Better Schools Programme Zimbabwe (BSPZ) building last Friday.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Moses Mhike was the guest of honour. He also commissioned the BSPZ building whose construction began in 2012.
Provincial Education Director (PED) Shylatte Mhike also attended the awards ceremony.
Schools received awards in sports, academia, science, innovation and arts. Students and coaches who excelled in the same categories also walked away with accolades.
Most schools received varying amounts of prize money and certificates for excelling in different fields. Learners received certificates and US$50 prize money.
Notable winners include Zimuto High School Public Speaking team that participated at the African competition in Lome, Togo.
Gokomere Primary was adjudged the best primary boarding school with the best Grade Seven results, Zimuto and Mutendi high schools were awarded Outstanding All Rounder awards.
Hellen McGhie received the District Schools Inspector (DSI) prize for winning the Zimbabwe Agricultural Show quiz.
Ndarama won the innovation awards after its students won the Junior Achievement Zimbabwe Company of the year and Best Application of Project Management.
