Chiredzi – Police on Monday retrieved one body of the four villagers who are still missing after eight people were marooned along Mtirikwi River in Chiredzi last Thursday afternoon.
Masvingo Police Spokesperson Kudakwashe Dhewa told The Mirror in an interview that remains of 14-year-old Tryphene Gambiya have been recovered.
“We retrieved remains of a 14-year-old girl and three other people are still missing from the mishap,” said Dhewa.
Chiredzi District Development Coordinator who is also chairman for the Civil Protection Department Lovemore Chisema said chances to find the bodies of the three other victims are slim although the searches would continue.
“We have searched in all places where we hoped to find the bodies and we are now losing hope. Chances of finding the bodies are now very slim,” said Chisema.
Eight people were marooned along Mutirikwi when the river was suddenly flooded from upstream as they crossed at Pagungwa point in Chiredzi North. They pitched themselves at a high place for some time but unfortunately four were swept away while another four hang on.
The four who survived were rescued by an Airforce of Zimbabwe helicopter after spending 24 hours on the river without food. https://masvingomirror.com
