MASVINGO – Police details guarding at the High Court in Masvingo looked from inside the fence.
A Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) student lost US$260 fees he was supposed to bank and recovered it in a minute, thanks to the alert officers.
A man and a woman who turned out to be Langton Gundu (40) of Madzura Village Hurungwe and Constance Amidu (35) of Burundushi Federation, Chinhoyi had stopped Perpins Maguraushe (19), a student at GZU who was coming out of CBZ Bank.
Suddenly as Police carefully watched they saw a small parcel being wrapped around with a sellotape and the three separated. Police rushed and stopped the three and Gundu tried to run away and was caught by Constables Johannes Josiah and Together Hwenje and the three were brought to the guardroom at the High Court.
They were quizzed on what they were doing and all three including the University student said nothing was happening. Police pressured the University student to come out clear because he could be a victim of some illegal transaction but he assured Police that nothing happened.
Police then asked how much money he had on him and he said he had US$260 and they asked him to take it out. The boy was shocked to find US$1 and RTGS$2 200 in the sealed parcel that he was given by the two.
The suspected conmen were asked to surrender all the money on them and Amidu was found with US$260. The student then confessed to the Police that the suspects had told him that they were into foreign currency exchange but they did not know their way around Masvingo. They asked to see the money he had. He did not realise that they had taken his money away.
Gundu and Amidu were arrested and they will be guests at Masvingo Central Police cells tonight before they appear in court tomorrow.
Masvingo Deputy Police Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Bright Simbi confirmed the incident to The Mirror.
