Mberengwa – The Matsweru Family whose member, Lodrick Matsweru was shot and killed by the Police in a case of mistaken identity in Mberengwa has complained against ZRP for not assisting with the cost of burial or just apologizing for the incident.

Matsweru of Rudway Village, chief Bvute in Mberengwa was pumped with four bullets into his chest by a police officer when he opened the door of the house where he was sleeping to answer to a knock.

Matsweru who died on the spot on November 3, 2020 was buried on November 8 in Chief Mudzengi area in Shurugwi. Police had not made any communication with the deceased’s family from the time of the callous killing up to the burial.

Police were looking for a suspect who allegeldy robbed a driver of a fuel tanker but did not ask any questions when the deceased answered to the knock.

Farai Matsweru, the deceased’s uncle said the family is angry at the Police for not assisting with funeral costs. He said if ZRP had no resources, it could at least have communicated or apologised for the incident.

“We are devastated by the killing of our son.

“We expected the Police to at least come and apologise. They did not even offer their condolences. It is like they killed a dog and yet this was an innocent man?” said the uncle.

Asked for comment, National Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said ZRP was still investigating the matter. He however, said that the family can raise any queries that it has with the Officer Commanding District, Chief Superintended Makusha.

Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights representative Prisca Dube confirmed to The Mirror that she would get in touch with the family and see how her organization can assist.

Jerry Matsweru thanked The Mirror for publishing the killing.

“We appreciate that you have been our voice. Police are treating our son like a dog that has been run over by a car. At one time the family decided to dump the body at the CID offices but elders restrained us. It is clear they made a mistake but why are they not taking responsibility. Police is disrespecting us.”

Chief Jailon Mudzengi who was speaking at the funeral accused ZRP of spilling the blood of an innocent man.

There was a huge presence of Seventh Day Adventist Church (SDA) members at the funeral. Some of the prominent members of the church present were, Pastor Mukwada Trust from Harare, SDA Pastor Mupfumbasi Timothy from Mberengwa and Pastor Dumisani Masikhize, Hanke Mission. https://masvingomirror.com
