CHIREDZI – People with Disabilities (PWDs) have expressed concern over lack of ramps at important public offices in Chiredzi chief among them, the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) building and council offices.
Hanyani Persons With Disability Trust (HPWDT) Executive director, Susan Chipo Machingura told The Mirror that PWDs miss a lot of meetings at Chiredzi Town Council because the boardroom has no ramps.
“As PWDs we miss a lot because council offices are not accessible to us. If you are wheelchair-bound there is no way you can access the boardroom,” said Machingura.
She singled out the Town Secretary’s office and other offices at Chiredzi as inaccessible because they have no ramps. She called for a disability desk at the offices while a solution into the whole problem is being looked into.
Machingura said she raised the issues during council budget consultations last year. She expressed concern that most of the buildings being constructed at new town have no ramps.
Chiredzi spokesperson Kudzai Chimusoro could not be reached for a comment.
