Beitbridge – Zvishavane-based Platinum Queens has lifted the Premier Netball League (PNL) Champions after the last games of the season played at St Joseph Primary School in Beitbridge on Sunday.
The Simbarashe Mlambo coached team amassed 79 points after playing a total of 40 games where they drew just one. Mlambo has since been honoured with a national trip to Maseru, Lesotho where he is leading the Zimbabwe team to the African Union Sports Council Region Five Games
Harare City Queens came second 4 points shy the log leaders. Ngezi Queens came third with 69 points while ZDF Queens occupied fourth position with 66 points. Chisumbanje based side Greenfuel were on fifth position with 65 points.
Correctional Queens finished at the bottom of the league without collecting even a single point.
PNL is a new kid on the block following its registration with the Zimbabwe Netball Association(ZINA) on June 2, 2021 with the aim of promoting the girl child through sport. There are 21 teams in the league.
PNL secretary general Liberty Mhizha confirmed that the season came to an end when he gave Two Nations an interview.
“We played our last games of the season in Beitbridge on Sunday at the Roman Catholic run St Joseph’s Primary School grounds. Our league kicked off without a sponsor and we depended on partners who played a pivotal role for the success that we enjoyed. The journey was not easy but we made it and we are looking forward to the 2022 season,” said Mhizha.
There will be an award ceremony at a date to be announced to honour the winners and outstanding players, said Mhizha.
“I am excited with our achievement. We came a long way and we rightfully deserve the accomplishment. I attribute the success to hard work and team work,” said Mlambo.
Mlambo has also fared well with the platinum miners while playing in the Rainbow Amateur Netball League before crossing to ZNL.
The Maseru games are slated for December 2 to 12 2021.
