BULAWAYO – Platinum Queens are the Nedbank Premier Netball League champions for a third consecutive time.
The team narrowly defeated bitter rivals Green Fuel 26-23 to be crowned champions at White City Stadium, Bulawayo over the weekend.
This was the second final playoff between the two rivals.
Platinum Queens Coach Simbarashe Mlambo dedicated the title to the late player Sibekezelo Ncube who died in April.
“We lost one of our dearest players Sibekezelo Ncube in April. We needed to win this one for her and definitely we did that and the icing on the cake was doing it at White City which is close to her home. The team fought to retain her dignity and to make sure that everything we lost was not in vain,” he said.
The team’s goal attack Chipo Shoko was voted player of the month while Green Fuel wing attack Faith Mutero was voted player of the bubble.
Mlambo also admitted that it was a tough match and said his charges excelled as a result of teamwork, determination, prayer and understanding the task at hand.
“I want to thank FC Platinum Holdings and our fans who have faithfully stood by us. We really had a run for our money, everybody was up for the task and Green Fuel kept on charging at us. We certainly did what we set out to do at the beginning of the season and that is to defend our title. It was not an easy walk,” he added
